The Fastest Guardian Alive
Michael Rosenbaum, who played Lex Luthor on Smallville, and was the voice of the Flash on the Justice League cartoons, revealed last night on Twitter that he read for the part of Peter Quill, aka Star-Lord, in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy movie. Rosenbaum read for his “pal,” James Gunn who is directing the movie. About the opportunity Rosenbaum exclaimed, “What a treat! Thanks Jimmy.”
Reportedly Joseph Gordon-Levitt is also “in the mix” for the role, along with other rumored contenders like Zachary Levi (Chuck, Thor: The Dark World), Jim Sturgess (Cloud Atlas), Lee Pace (Pushing Daisies, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey), Eddie Redmayne (Les Misérables) and Joel Edgerton (Animal Kingdom, Zero Dark Thirty). Although Gunn has said that those earlier casting reports were “inaccurate.”
Peter Quill was created by Steve Englehart and Steve Gan, and made his first appearance in 1976′s Marvel Preview #4. He was the child of a human mother and an alien father, but grew up as an orphan who went on to become a NASA astronaut. Eventually he would assume the mantle of the interplanetary police officer Star-Lord. More recently in comics he has joined Drax the Destroyer, Gamora, Rocket Raccoon, Adam Warlock, Phyla-Vell, and Groot, to form a new version of the Guardians of the Galaxy.
Guardians of the Galaxy is scheduled to open Aug. 1, 2014.
