Victorian Batman

In 1989, Brian Augustyn and Hellboy creator Mike Mignola started a new DC Comics imprint for alternate reality graphic novels. Their first story, Gotham by Gaslight, took Batman and imagined him as a character in a European Gotham City of the 19th century. Here the Victorian styled Dark Knight set his skills against Jack the Ripper. This started a long run of graphic novels that put DC characters into tales set in alternate realities.

Gotham by Gaslight also became the inspiration for a video game. Day 1 Studios, the developer behind F.3.A.R. and Fracture, was working on a Batman video game based on the graphic novel. The game was being developed for the PS3 and Xbox 360 between 2009 and 2010. An animation prototype was created for the game before it would eventually be canceled.
