There Can Be Only One . . . More

According to Variety, Lionsgate’s Summit Entertainment is eyeing Ryan Reynolds to star in the Highlander reboot.

“Ryan Reynolds has emerged as the front-runner to topline Lionsgate-Summit’s franchise reboot, and though it’s unclear whether an actual offer has been made, sources tell Variety that both sides are in talks and are very interested in working together. Insiders add that Reynolds is weighing other offers and that [he] could still pursue another project,” reports Variety.

Juan Carlos Fresnadillo is set to direct a script by Art Marcum and Matt Holloway, with Neal Moritz and Peter Davis producing through Moritz’s Original Film banner, along with Enrique López Lavigne and Belen Atienza. Justin Lin and RCR Media Group’s Rui Costa Reis and Eliad Josephson will exec produce.

Plot details for the new movie are being kept wrapped up, but the original series followed an immortal swordsman who battled other immortal warriors through the centuries, all battling to be the last of their kind.

Summit, a Lionsgate company, acquired the rights to remake the cult classic from Davis-Panzer Productions, Inc. in May of 2008. The original film starred Christopher Lambert and spun-off several sequels and a TV series.

The Reynolds led Green Lantern my have had less than stellar performance in the theaters in 2011, but he followed that up this year with Safe House, one of his biggest hits which has grossed more than $200 million world-wide.

If Reynolds takes the Highlander role it would give him more opportunity to sharpen his sword skills. He previously played the sword-wielding merc-with-a-mouth Deadpoolin X-Men Origins: Wolverine. And he is set to reprise his role as Deadpool in a solo movie for the character at Fox.
