Mmmm . . . TVVVV

McFarlane Toys has designed The Walking Dead Season Three Limited Edition Blu-Ray Case, which takes the form of the fish tanks full of floating decapitated heads that we saw in The Governor’s private quarters. Played by David Morrissey on the AMC series, The Governor is a scheming and scary character who has risen to power in this post-apocalyptic world through his ruthless tactics. Although he isn’t all work, he does like to enjoy a drink and unwind after a hard day by staring into a fish tank full of his victims’ heads.

The design for the case was made before Season Three of The Walking Dead was shot – or Morrissey was even cast as The Governor. “AMC gave us the news that The Governor was going to be in Season Three and was in all the scripts, but they didn’t even know what he was going to look like yet!” says Todd McFarlane. “So we knew we wanted to do something that reflected that, and was cool and creepy and the same time.”

“McFarlane has a very intimate relationship with AMC, so I was approving concepts on this Blu-Ray case before Season Three even aired,” Kirkman says. “So while we were building things on set, Todd and the team at McFarlane Toys were coming in and scanning actors and scanning props. So having them come in and do the fish tank with the severed heads while we were still building it for the show is a pretty cool thing, and I think makes these products much more accurate and cooler for the fans.”

“We thought it would be fun for the consumer, after buying the case and taking it home, had to get a little interactive, because we’re not supplying the water!” McFarlane says with a laugh. “So you’re going to have to fill up the tanks yourself, and we’ve got little hooks on the heads, so you can arrange them any way you see fit. You can hang them in a certain order, or you can just let them go to the ground and flop around. No one person’s case has to be exactly like the other’s.”

McFarlane adds that the case should have an electronic component, so the tank can light up. “It’s something where it should come across as an art piece, and then you can turn it to the side, and the wood paneling disguises where you can take out the discs.”

McFarlane Toys previously designed the limited edition box set for Season Two, which was a flip-top zombie head with a screwdriver through the eye. That case completely sold out and won some “Year’s Best” awards. “I’m sure every mom in America will not approve of this, nor will she run out and buy it!” offered McFarlane, “But once she gets out of the way, there’ll be tons of people that will enjoy it just for the good clean fun that it is.”

McFarlane also said that that he would enjoy a chance to enter the creative side of The Walking Dead. When asked about drawing something for the comic book he said that, “time permitting in my schedule, it’d be cool – I’ve studied the look of the run of that book, so it might work best if there was an annual or something where different artists could come in and bring their own look to the book. And on the TV end, it might be fun to come in and direct an episode or two.”

McFarlane also hopes to be able to create more toys for the popular TV series. “I was talking to the actor who plays Daryl (Norman Reedus), who is probably the most popular guy on the TV show, and he keeps bugging me for a thing of him on his motorcycle, which I think is a really cool idea. I think I could get away with that as a statue without having to put in a monster, because it would be a fairly uncommon-looking image of him.”

The final price and sale date for the Blu-Ray case aren’t set yet, but it’ll be available online and through most mass retail stores later this year . The Walking Dead returns Sunday, Feb.10 to AMC, and the Image comic continues every month.

The Walking Dead # 100 : Lucille Is Coming

Beware Lucille

Image Comics has released a teaser image to promote the upcoming milestone 100th issue of The Walking Dead. The comic book continues to be written by series creator Robert Kirkman, with art by Charlie Adlard, but details on the issue are being kept under wraps, with only some variant cover images for the issue being released. And now the teaser.

The cryptic image teases “Lucille is Coming.” However there has been nothing to this point that tells you who or what Lucille is. Some information may be revealed in Junes’s The Walking Dead #99 as a lead up to the big 100th issue.

“I can say that everybody knows that there’s this group out there called the Saviors that are kind of intimidating everyone on the Hilltop,” Kirkman said in a May interview. “They’ve kind of gotten on Rick’s radar, we [saw] their first interaction in #97. We’ve basically got another very violent, dangerous group out there that Rick is going to be clashing with head-on and I can say that issue #100 is going to easily be the most gruesome, most violent, disturbing issue of “The Walking Dead” yet. So, be on the lookout. Yet, when I say that, I do remember all of the gruesome, disturbing and violent things that have happened in “The Walking Dead” thus far, so I promise I mean it.”

Geek Of The Week : Secret One: Teeth, With Which To Eat # 1

Now We Eat

Secret One: Teeth, With Which To Eat  #1 from Image  is a conspiracy tale dealing with the government, a corrupt private security firm, and corporate espionage.

The story opens with Mr. Dunn being visited at home late at night by a masked interrogator. Beaten and tied to a chair, Mr. Dunn is informed rather matter-of-factly by the intruder that before they can begin to communicate clearly that two things need to happen. The second thing is that the two of them in the room are not the only people who will be affected by this meeting. The masked then presents photos, names and addresses of Mr. Dunn’s family, a very effective tactic to break him down. The first thing was that the intruder needed to impress upon Mr. Dunn how serious he is. And he is rather persuasive with a pair of pliers to efficiently get his point across.

The following morning Mr. Dunn meets with his attorney to try and figure out what he should after his frightning encounter. Coincidently, the counselor’s firm is having a visit from their security company to go over some services that they have recently delivered. After which the security firm’s representatives impress upon the board members how important it is that they upgrade to their expanded swervices package. They make their point by telling the board how easy it was for them to access their offices, bypass their firewalls, and access their records. All of them.

The pitch seems to be rather effective demonstrating how important the security compnay’s enhanced security package can be. But it has the feeling that perhaps the security company in angling for more than just selling more services. They may also be trying to gain influence in Washington.

Later, the attorney arranges a meeting between Mr. Dunn and one of the security company’s representatives from the earlier meeting, Mr. Grant. Mr. Grant impresses upon Mr. Dunn that his late night visitor means that business. And that his firm can help Mr. Dunn with his problem, but they are very expensive. Grant is able to clinch the Deal with Mr. Dunn, however, Grant actually is playing against Dunn. Grant is working with Dunn’s visitor and is setting Dunn up.

Secret One: Teeth, With Which To Eat #1, written by Jonathan Hickman is an intriguing read. The story sets up the whos in the story, but is building up a mystery by leaving out the whats and whys to be discovered later. This is an interesting story that has me eager to read the next issue. The artwork on the issue is impressive. Ryan Bodenheim is the artist on the issue, with Michael Garland handling the colors, and Rus Wooton doing the lettering. The art team does an exceptional job of story telling and created a comic book that looks incredible. The coloring for the issue is quite interesting and unique in the way that it paints panels with an overall hue, but then at times it uses splashes of another color for a dynamic effect.

Secret One: Teeth, With Which To Eat #1 is a fantastic read. The art and story create an engrossing comic that keeps you moving through the pages. This comic book is a must read.

Kirkman Brings Thief of Thieves To AMC

To Watch A Thief

The Walking Dead creator, Robert Kirkman, is teaming with AMC again for another adaptation of one of his comic book projects. He will be developing his crime comic Thief of Thieves, which just recently began its run at Image Comics.

“Much like The Walking Dead brought horror to television in a unique and groundbreaking way, I feel Thief of Thieves can do the same thing for heist stories, showing the humanity of all the characters, including the criminals,” Kirkman says.

The project reunites Kirkman and Walking Dead producer David Alpert of Circle of Confusion with Chic Eglee, who they worked with on the first season of the zombie TV series. Eglee will serve as showrunner if Thief of Thieves is picked up as a series.

“AMC recognizes the limitless ideas generated by the comic industry,” Kirkman says. ”Their dedication to bringing The Walking Dead to life as a TV show has been key to its success and I’m excited about the potential of Thief of Thieves to reach similar levels of success.”

Following the double life of master thief Conrad Paulson, Thief of Thieves is  his attempt to regain the life he left behind. Now, with a grown son he hardly knows, and an ex-wife he never stopped loving, Conrad must try to piece together what’s left of his life, before the FBI finally catch up to him… but it appears they are the least of his worries.

The comic book series launched in February, and the first two issues have sold out. The third issue is scheduled to be in stores Wednesday. Kirkman developed Thief of Thieves while in the writers room for The Walking Dead TV series. Nick Spencer wrote the first arc of Thief of Thieves, with Kirkman serving as head writer to oversee the series.

“Working with AMC has been a tremendously positive experience, and I’m looking forward to continuing and strengthening our relationships there,” Kirkman says. “And I can’t neglect to mention I’ve been dying to work with Chic again since we wrapped on The Walking Dead season one.”

“It’s incredibly exciting to put the band back together with Robert, Chic and AMC; it just feels great,” Alpert says.
