Batman Incorporated 1 grabs right away on the first page. The issue opens with a Japanese hero, Mr. Known, captured and being tortured in his own base by a new villain. The scene gets amped up even more as Mr. Unknown’s partner Jiro walks in to find his boss dead, and their lair being torn apart. He has to make a hasty retreat for his life, leaving his partner behind.

From there the book jumps to Batman and Catwoman teaming up to infiltrate one of Doctor Sivana’s labs. Sivana has invented something that Bruce is worried about, so he and Selina take out a giant robot, and a horde of robotic rats to procure the item. Batman and Catwoman hit the scene hard and fast in this subplot and then move on to the main story.

They travel to Japan where Bruce wants to meet and train Mr. Unknown. He invites Selina to join him and she decides to tag along. They arrive at Mr. Unknown’s lair to find it wrecked, and him dead. A few henchmen were left behind, but they are quickly dispatched. And Batman is pissed off.

A desperate Jiro arrives at his apartment to find his girlfriend Misaki being held by the main villain and a few of his henchmen. The villain taunts Jiro and threatens to kill Misaki. Pushed to the edge, Jiro shoots the villain, sending him crashing out the window. It is then revealed that Jiro had been put into a Saw-esque situation with his girlfriend sitting on a deathtrap. The trap is activated and Misaki plunges to what maybe her death. Batman and Catwoman arrive just in time to see her fall. Batman helps Jiro tackle some henchmen while Catwoman dives after Misaki. The issue ends with the ladies in a life threatening predicament.

This is a great comic book. Its fast paced. There’s plenty of action. And it’s pretty intense to see the depiction of a hero that has been captured by a villain, and his partner on the run for his life. I enjoy seeing Batman and Catwoman work together, and I liked seeing Bruce and Selina’s interactions in this comic. Grant Morrison hits a home run writing this issue.

The artwork is excellent. Yanick Paquette provides the pencils, with Michel Lacombe joining as the inker, Natchan Fairbairn is the colorist, and John J. Hill is the inker. The art team does a super job of story telling. They do a masterful job of capturing the frantic pace of the action, and showing the emotion of the characters. There’s a short scene with some downtime for Bruce and Selina that does an excellent job of portraying their interaction with each other. Cover to cover this is an awesome first issue . You have to buy this one.
